YEREVAN, October 7. /TASS/. Armenia documented a spike in coronavirus cases by 672 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of reported infections to 53,755, the country’s Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

“Over the past 24 hours, 672 cases of COVID-19 were recorded, while 178 patients recovered. Overall, there are 45,119 recoveries, while the number of all the cases has amounted to 53,755 cases,” the statement says.

Armenia has carried out about 313,000 tests for coronavirus, so about 11% of the country’s 2.9-million population have been tested for the disease so far. In the past 24 hours, 2,878 tests were done. Of those, 18% were positive.

About 1.8% of Armenians have tested positive for coronavirus. The maximum daily high of COVID-19 cases – 766 – was reported on June 7.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials informed the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus – named COVID-19 by the WHO – have been reported in every corner of the globe, including Russia.
